Welcome to week 36
Hi Principles to Live Byers!
This week we're moving into 2 Kings. What a story! This book picks up where
1 Kings leaves off, describing "one people" and two kingdoms. The
northern kingdom was called Israel and the southern kingdom was called Judah.
Remember that 1 and 2 Kings was originally one book in Hebrew. It was divided
into two parts when the Old Testament was translated into Greek
about 150 B.C. The time period for both 1 and 2 Kings covers approximately
400 years.
Very few of the kings of Israel followed God, and sadly most of the kings
of Judah followed the same pagan path. Consequently, because of their sinful
ways, both kingdoms were taken into captivity. Israel was taken
captive by the Assyrians in 722 B.C. and Judah by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.--which
is where the history in 2 Kings ends.
A major bright spot for Judah is shortly before their captivity when Josiah
became king. He discovered the book of the Law and brought tremendous reforms
throughout the land. There are some powerful principles that emerge from his
story--particularly when we think in terms of renewing the church of Jesus
Christ. Take a look and see what you can find!

It just dawned on us that tonight is our first year anniversary of the beginning
of our Tuesday night Principles to Live By Bible study. Come
celebrate with us! At the break well take a few more minutes than
usual to have some coffee and cookies and get to know each other better.
Blessings,
Gene
