Part One
Welcome to week 27!
This week we continue in this next section of 1 Samuel is one of the most
dramatic in the wholebook. The children of Israel wanted a king like those
nations around them.
Consequently, they rejected God as their king.
We must remember that asking for a king was not Israel's sin. Rather, God
was displeased because the leaders in Israel wanted to put their trust in
a man rather than in Him. If they had asked with pure hearts, they would have
been in God's perfect will. However, they asked with impure motives that were
selfish and sinful.
Consequently, God told Samuel to give them what they wanted--a king. Rather
than choosing God's "perfect will," they opted for His "permissive
will"--even though they knew they and their children would suffer some
very serious consequences.
Obviously, there are some great principles that grow out of this story.
We'll begin in chapter 8 and move on into that dramatic scene where eventually
Saul failed miserably and God commissioned Samuel to anoint David to eventually
replace him as the king of Israel.
